Samantha Humen, Flutist

Ms. Humen has been involved in the performing arts for a majority of her life. A flutist with over a decade of experience, she has been in the professional performance sphere since 2018. Having performed in a variety of settings, Ms. Humen always seeks to create an accessible and welcoming environment for her audience in order to bring them along on a musical journey. Having participated in masterclasses under Gareth McLearnon, Courtney Morton, and the faculty at The Consummate Flutist program hosted by Carnegie Mellon University, Ms. Humen has gained wonderful insights from top flute players of today. Currently, she is based in the Greater Philadelphia region of Pennsylvania.

Completing her undergraduate studies in flute performance (B.M.) under Edward Wargo at Marywood University, Samantha also pursued a minor in World Religions in order to incorporate a holistic approach to her programming and music preparation. This has resulted in her conducting interdisciplinary research in order to study how music is taught and viewed in the Western Classical tradition in comparison to other world music traditions. This informs her teaching philosophy in which Ms. Humen believes music making encompasses all aspects of an individual.

During her graduate studies, Ms. Humen pursues a Master of Music degree (M.M) in Flute Performance at Temple University’s Boyer College of Music and Dance under Mr. Patrick Williams, associate principal of the Philadelphia Orchestra. Here, Ms. Humen expanded her horizons by performing diverse repertoire in numerous ensembles ranging from Symphony Orchestra, Opera, New Music Ensemble (an ensemble whose focus is on highlighting and premiering new compositions at four concerts each year), Wind Ensemble, and various chamber settings. By maintaining versatility as a musician, Samantha seeks to continue refining her voice and artistry as a flutist in the modern day.

Taking her experience from the concert hall to the practice room, Ms. Humen also has a passion for teaching. She maintains a private studio of students and also teaches at summer festivals. Recently, she has been spending her summers at her alma matter teaching at Marywood’s Summer Music Academy which provides summer enrichment to students throughout the Northeast Pennsylvania region. Within her private studio, Samantha focuses on the growth of each individual students and their related goals. She seeks for them to develop a resonant sound and ease of technique for their respective level. Fostering a love of music is at the heart of Ms. Humen’s teaching philosophy.
